Dubai Municipality bans the sale and trade of “Black Death” candy

Referring to the news circulating on social media about the spread of a challenge among users of “Tik Tok” application by eating a candy called “Black Death” and claiming that it causes paralysis in the body for (10) seconds and abnormal reactions due to its extreme acidity,  as well as it is not suitable for use by children under (8) years.

The following is the Food Safety Department’s response to this video:

  • o One food establishment in the Emirate of Dubai was identified as selling the product referred to in the rumor, as it sells the product under the name (Black Death Mega Sours) via the Instagram application.
  • It was found that the product was not registered in the Food Safety Management System, as the establishment purchased a product called (Mega Sour Plooms) in plastic containers from outside the country through online stores without being inspected by the Food Safety Department, repackage it in plastic bags and put a new label on it.
  • The food establishment was banned from trading the candy product mentioned in the rumor due to its non-compliance with food label specifications and the possibility of causing harm to consumers as a result of its extreme acidity.
  • The product was seized and legal actions were taken against the violating facility.
  • The facility was also obligated to delete advertisements related to the product on social media.

The Food Safety Department advises the public not to circulate rumors related to food and to verify their authenticity by communicating with reliable official sources in Dubai Municipality.
